Colgate's Celebration of MLK, Jr. Day Grows in '08

Ernest Daily had a dream. To commemorate the progress made by Martin Luther King, Jr. and to encourage discussion about continuing King's work, Daily, the Student Affairs Coordinator, organized a series of events to take place on campus this past week. Through workshops and performances, the arts and activism were combined to allow students and faculty members to reach each other on a different level.
Campus Break-In Activates Emergency Network for First Time

At about 1:00 a.m. on December 9, just before winter break, Colgate students received a text message generated by the e2Campus emergency notification system. The alert resulted from a larceny attempt in an unlocked Russell House room in which two students were asleep.

The Colgate 13 is known more for sweet serenades than for building houses. But for a week over winter break, the 13 went to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity instead of touring the way they usually do. Usually over winter break, the 13 spends three weeks touring the country, singing on the radio and television, at town halls and football games.

Environmental Report Pushes 'Gate Towards Green

All over the country, people have become aware that we all need to work harder to help preserve the environment. This week, that sentiment reached Colgate as the Student Government Association (SGA) released their Report on Environmental Initiatives. Compiled by SGA Policy Coordinator for Environmental Initiatives senior Nicole Svajlenka, the report takes a close look at the environmental status of Colgate and offers suggestions for how the students, SGA and the University as a whole can improve behavior in terms of the envionment.
Edge Bistro Brings Breakfast Back

New Year, new semester and new dining plan: 2008 not only brought on a horde of resolutions but also the reopening of breakfast at the Cutting Edge Bistro. The new continental breakfast is being offered from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each weekday, but is only being considered a trial run by Sodexho Dining Services.

This February, someone is coming to Colgate who may change the way students think about dieting. Working together with Sodexho Food Services and the Counseling Center, the Student Health Center is bringing a registered dietician to campus. Her name is Pam Podenak, and she will be making herself available to any sports team, student group or individual who is interested in pursuing a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle.

Over the winter break, the Barge Canal Coffee Company's business exploded as buzz about the café's Colgate Blend spread across the internet. Publicity about the coffee was sparked when Sports Illustrated online columnist Peter King, father of senior Mary Beth King, mentioned the coffee in his "Monday Morning QB" column published in late November on SI.

Last Thursday, Professor Emeritus at University of Virginia and author of Plows, Plagues and Petroleum: How Humans Took Control of Climate Dr. William Ruddiman, spoke to a packed audience in Love Auditorium on the topic of human impact on the environment. In his lecture, Ruddiman explained his theory that humans began changing the environment thousands of years ago, as opposed to the widespread belief that change began only hundreds of years ago.
Townhouse Parking Becomes an Issue

If you live at the Townhouse or have tried to visit, you might have noticed the serious lack of parking there. As of last semester, the Townhouse on Route 12B housed 213 residents, 66 percent of whom owned cars. However, there are currently only 136 parking spaces.
