Most of us know you can get cheap clothes at Wise Buys and that there's a Wal-Mart about twenty minutes down Route 12. Some of us may even know the names of some of the surrounding towns. But do you really know Central New York? In our road-tripping travels, we've come to discover a few gems right in Colgate's backyard and we've made it our mission to bring you the best every week. This week, we're taking it easy with a couple of museums and an art gallery -- all proven to be relaxing atmospheres, just in time for the stressful weeks ahead. So grab the keys to your car (or bribe your closest friend with a car), turn up the music, and trip out with us.
Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum (7010 Lakeport Rd, Chittenango, NY): Sure, you've probably noticed the paintings at the Barge and have heard of how most of the streets downtown used to be canals. But have you ever wanted to know more about the canal era in Central New York? The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum offers a unique view into this period with the Chittenango Landing industrial complex. You will be amazed at just how well the boats are preserved here. Next week, the gift shop will be holding a sale on all items, including jams, relishes, maple syrup and even hand-made jewelry (Christmas gifts, anyone?). The museum is open on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m.
The Gallery of CNY (58 Albany Street, Cazenovia, NY): Nationally commended regional artists are showcased here at The Gallery. This Saturday (December 1) The Gallery is playing host to a holiday-themed show "New Artwork for the Holidays". Local artists will refresh the collection, as it were, with newer works. Be sure to check out featured artists Hall Groat (oil and acrylic) and Dan Tennant (gouache). The show is free to attend -- and that's even more of an incentive for "struggling college students"! Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 11 to 5.
Northeast Classic Car Museum (24 Rexford St (NYS Route 23), Norwich, NY): Cruise down Route 12 until you hit Route 23 and you'll discover an unforgettable stop. The exhibits shown in the Classic Car Museum change often, so you're sure to see a new set-up each time you come by. Open every day from 9 to 5, the museum holds more than 100 antique cars in mint condition (some even dating back to before 1910). Needless to say, Northeast Classic is a treasure of Central New York that is ranked among the top car museums in the state. So come on, take the drive and venture inside for a trip through the past in eight exhibits.
We hope you enjoy this week's picks in the area. If you've got a specific place you want us to check out or want us to find something for you within a good distance, give us a shout! Let us take the first hit. Happy tripping.
