Most of us know you can get cheap clothes at Wise Buys and that there's a Wal-Mart about twenty minutes down Route 12. Some of us may even know the names of some of the surrounding towns. But do you really know Central New York? In our road-tripping travels, we've come to discover a few gems right in Colgate's backyard and we've made it our mission to bring you the best every week. This week, we've made sure to hold your attention with some good drinks, good games, and good times. So grab the keys to your car (or bribe your closest friend with a car), turn up the music, and trip out with us.
Hippos: The House of Billiards (5160 Commercial Drive East, Yorkville, NY): With an inventory that includes 24 billiard tables, two Foosball tables, and a room for Table tennis and Darts, Hippos has everything to keep you entertained for hours. Every Monday is 8-Ball Amateur Night; Tuesdays are NPL Sanction 9-Ball Nights; and every Wednesday is 9-Ball Non-Sanction Night. Oh, and gals, every night is considered Ladies Night at Hippos. (You get to play for free until 7 PM!) Feel free to refuel at the deli and snack bar, which are both open until closing.
Saranac Brewery (830 Varick St, Utica, NY): For over a century, the Matt Brewing Company has been up and running in Utica. So why not pick up a historical cue while (if you're over 21) enjoying the alcoholic pride of Central New York -- quite the incentive, eh? Birthplace of the ales from the annual Save the Ales event, you can drink all you want while you're there. Tours run from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Poolville Country Store (1245 Earlville Road, Poolville, NY): Of course, we had to include a place with some good eats. This week's selection, Poolville Country Store, has recently received new ownership and now accepts reservations for dinner. Settled in the midst of the dairies and cornfields of upstate, the Country Store is the perfect place to sit down for a hearty meal -- might we suggest either the roasted chicken with corn soufflé or seared yellowfin tuna on top of crispy noodle pancakes? Neighboring Bouckville is home to several antique shops, so you can make it a full day trip around the area. Who can resist the charm of country in such convenient proximity? We sure couldn't.
We hope you enjoy this week's picks in the area. If you've got a specific place you want us to check out or want us to find something for you within a good distance, give us a shout! Let us take the first hit.
Happy tripping.
