We spent this past Friday afternoon at the Barge with Mayor Sue McVaugh of the Village of Hamilton. Over a pot of tea, we got to know more about the Village that is home to our beloved Colgate community. Just as the SGA is being proactive to make positive impacts on campus, Mayor McVaugh is overseeing a series of projects to improve Hamilton and serve her constituents' interests.
As you may have heard or seen, it snows here. To bring snow removal techniques in line with our shared interest in protecting the environment, new practices are being implemented this season by Mayor McVaugh. There are numerous concerns regarding the previous use of salt and sand to keep roadways and walkways safe for their users during the harsh winter season. Salt and its residue can be harmful to the integrity of the roadways and have potentially dangerous health implications for animals. To remedy these issues, the town is going to be testing a brine solution this winter which has lower salinity and is subsequently much safer for the environment.
We share with Mayor McVaugh that the SGA has a policy coordinator for environmental initiatives, Nicole Svajlenka, who is currently working on several projects to make the Colgate Community more environmentally friendly. We look forward to cooperating with Mayor McVaugh as we initiate a dialogue with downtown restaurants regarding environmentally conscious practices. Beginning with a discussion about disposable containers, we are excited about what is on the horizon for our partnership with Hamilton businesses in preserving our environment.
Another proposal that would have implications for the Village would be the addition of more parking in the University Townhouses. As many of you know, there is a serious shortage of parking for residents of the Townhouses. Among these 213 residents 140 own cars that compete on a nightly basis for 132 spots. Mayor McVaugh offered to speak with us further about the process to gain Village approval for the additional parking should the proposal be accepted by Colgate's Administration. We are currently working with Residential Life, Campus Safety, and Buildings & Grounds to find a feasible problem to the parking situation. In the meantime, please know that Campus Safety will ticket you if you park illegally in the Townhouses. If you are a resident or visitor of the Townhouses and would like to get involved with this initiative, please contact us!
