Most of us know you can get cheap clothes at Wise Buys and that there's a Wal-Mart about twenty minutes down Route 12. Some of us may even know the names of some of the surrounding towns. But do you really know Central New York? In our road-tripping travels, we've come to discover a few gems right in Colgate's backyard and we've made it our mission to bring you the best every week. This week, we've ventured a bit farther -- to the "metropolis" of Syracuse for some good eats and scary treats. So grab the keys to your car (or bribe your closest friend with a car), turn up the music, and trip out with us…candy corn not included.

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse (302 Old Liverpool Road, Liverpool (Syracuse), NY): Sure, you can go into town for Sushi Blues and get your sushi fix in less than five minutes. However, you can travel the hour to Syracuse to this more upscale sushi joint and experience all you'll need with the cuisine and more. Voted the best sushi bar eight years in a row, the hibachi chefs will entertain you while you chow down on juicy steak (or tofu) and delicious hand rolls.

Big Dip (216 South Main Street, North Syracuse, NY): Got a case of the munchies? After dinner, head over to Big Dip for dessert, located less than ten minutes away. What better way to finish off a scrumptious sushi meal than a banana split or an ice cream cookie sandwich at a shop dedicated solely to sweetness? It's conveniently located near the restaurant and well priced -- the only difficulty you'll have is choosing which dessert to gobble down.

Fright Night at the Fair (581 State Fair Blvd, Syracuse, NY): Now that your stomach is full and you're feeling content, it's time to head on over to Fright Night at the Fair, an event that will be sure to get you into the Halloween spirit. Here, you can visit such attractions as "Circus of Fear", "Carnival Macabre", and "The Creature". Feeling brave? Wander through the multiple mazes and face the ghouls inside…and try not to scream. We dare you. Fright Night runs this weekend, and again on Halloween from 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

We hope you enjoy this week's picks in the area. If you've got a specific place you want us to check out or want us to find something for you within a good distance, give us a shout! Let us take the first hit. Happy tripping.
