The New York Times is back on campus! Thanks to a collaborative effort between the SGA, Residential Education, the Dean of the College, the Dean of the Faculty, and the Office of the President, the Colgate bubble is once again burst as copies of The New York Times are once again available for free on campus.
The New York Times, once a staple at Colgate, was noticeably absent at the start of this academic year. To fill this void, Senators Robert Bikwemu '10 and Lindsay Levine '08 wrote a resolution that supported bringing the paper back and presented it to the SGA Senate two weeks ago. Last week, it was passed overwhelmingly after exciting debate (and apparently we weren't the only ones who missed the crossword puzzle!).
The process to bring the paper back then came into our hands. We teamed up with Speaker of the Senate David Kusnetz '09, to propose a partnership between the SGA and Colgate's administration. By sharing the cost of the campus-wide subscription with three administrative offices, we were able to fully fund 250 copies, the same number we've had in the past. These newspapers will be delivered each day to the COOP and Frank Dining Hall. Though this year's subscription will start as soon as possible, we are already looking to next year by partnering with President Chopp to identify a donor to fund the campus-wide subscription for years to come.
It is proactive pursuits like bringing back The New York Times that are what we are here for. We are so excited to have reached this goal early in the year, and we hope to continue to be your advocates to improve the Colgate experience. On behalf of the entire SGA, we would like to express our gratitude to Dean Jennifer Adams and Dean Raj Bellani for assisting with this project and making this new partnership possible.
Enjoy The New York Times! We hope this is the first of many successes that we can share with you this year.
