Happy midterms, everyone! It's hard to believe we've already reached this point in the fall semester. At last week's full Senate meeting, we were honored to have President Chopp and Dean Weinberg say a few words of encouragement, as well as Mark Spiro present information on major capital projects (Case Library and the Ho Science Center). Ask your Senator for more information.
From the Prez and Vice Prez's corner: over the past few weeks, Preston and I have been organizing the logistics of a Student Athletic Task Force (if you're not too tired of Colgate acronyms, this one will be SATF) in conjunction with the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). We hope to have a complete task force composed of student athletes, non-athletes and SGA representatives in place within the next few weeks to really begin to examine the state of athletics on the Colgate campus. Here is an excerpt from our mission statement:
The mission of the task force is to address the current state of fan support and broad student interest in Colgate's exceptional athletic teams. We will accomplish this goal by merging a reverence for the glory and tradition of the past with the interests and structures of the current and future student community.
I am also pleased to announce that I have been asked to sit on this year's Dean of the College Search Committee. I see my position on the committee as an opportunity for the entire Colgate student body to have a voice in the selection process for the next DOC (another acronym for you!). The search committee, headed by President Chopp and Dean Tiefenthaler, is composed of faculty, staff and students, and is interested in gaining insight from Colgate students in this process.
Representatives from the committee will be visiting a number of groups on campus to gain the student perspective on what we would like to see in the new Dean of the College. The SGA communications committee has created a portal group entitled Students for a New DOC, where you can post comments regarding characteristics you think are important for this person to embody. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact on Colgate's campus, and one in which you can all play a role.
Please join the portal group discussion or shoot me an email with insight that I can pass on to the committee. Your SGA Senator will also be asking for comments over the next few weeks.
Here is a blurb about the details within the position of Dean of the College that you should all be aware of: The Dean currently leads and oversees a student affairs division of more than 50 professionals and 13 departments. Departments currently reporting to the Dean include Residential Life, Center of Leadership and Student Involvement, Center for Outreach, Volunteerism and Education, Career Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, International Student Programs, Student Health Services, ALANA Cultural Affairs Center, and Campus Safety.
Good luck with midterms! I'll be hanging out at the JCC until Wednesday.
