The Colgate volleyball team trotted a new lineup out on Wednesday night against Siena but couldn't change its luck, as they fell 3-0 to lower the team's record at 0-5 on the season. All three of the games were close - especially the 31-29 Siena victory in the second game. The Raiders lost the other two games each by the score of 30-25. Senior Allie Nichols has 24 set assists and first-year Katrina Zawojski led the team with 14 kills and tied fellow first-year Jackie Adlam for the team lead in digs with five.
Head coach Jenna Panatier has been optimistic about the rotations in positions that the team made, saying that the Raiders had "found out how to make it work [since] each of the athletes are willing and able to take on new roles."
The women went 5-19 last season with just a 2-12 record within the Patriot League. They lost two key players to graduation in Natalie Rawson '05 and Laurel Oliver '05. Rawson was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and broke her own school record for digs in a season, while Oliver led the team in both kills and attacks. The two have been replaced by a very strong group of six first-year recruits, including Adlam, Zawojski, Christine Gault, Merryl Pohl, Elizabeth Rivers and Paige Woodruff. The team is now led by senior co-captains Nichols and Meghaan Walsh.
"Youth becomes experience and the experience is going to turn the program around," Panatier remarked, describing her excitement about the new first-year players. She also said that there has been "great senior leadership, but it is important that the 'C' is not needed to lead." Everyone on the team has been contributing as the program builds itself for the future.
In the season-opening match against Binghamton, Zawojski and Adlam played very well, as Zawojski recorded a double-double, with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Adlam scored 17 digs. Nichols also had 22 assists and 14 digs, but the Raiders could not hold off the Bearcats and lost, three games to none. Colgate started the match well, scoring the first three points of the first game, but lost each of the first two games. In the third, the Raiders mounted a strong comeback, winning 10 of 14 points to tie the game at 23, but could not hold off the Bearcats, who won the game, 30-25.
