Over the past four years, I've received countless pieces of advice from friends, parents, professors, sorority sisters and of course, movies and television shows. Because these words are often much more profound than anything I could ever come up with, I thought I'd offer them to you this week as my last, and probably best, words of advice before I leave Colgate.
- When you lose sight of your dreams: "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." -Henry Ford
- When you're sick of being single or dependent: "Being alone is not the same as being lonely."
- If you want to survive Colgate: "Don't take life too seriously."
- Along that note, from the greatest movie ever: "If you can't laugh at yourself, life's gonna seem a whole lot longer than you'd like." -Garden State
- In the wise words of Dr. Phil: "You teach others how to treat you."
- When you don't know how to deal with that "snake in the grass": "Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names." -John F. Kennedy
- From my dad: "Krispy Kremes are really good doughnuts."
- For those of you scared to go abroad or move away next year: "You will never discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."
- Just remember even Led Zeppelin can say: "Good times, bad times, you know I've had my share."
- For next time you face rejection or disappointment: "Things don't go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be."
- On your time here at Colgate: "You have four years to be irresponsible here...Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember class time, but you'll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends....The work never ends but college does..."
- For those of you who like to complain about the state of affairs here at Colgate or in the world: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." -Mahatma Ghandi
