Last week the Student Government Association discussed various issues regarding election policy, tsunami relief, and approved funding for Danny Glover and Felix Justice to come speak at Colgate for Black History Month. Senate committees continue to discuss important issues on campus, ranging from bringing back a January Term to Cruiser Schedules to getting more snack machines in our dorms. These are all issues that are important and I urge you all to read your minutes to find out more information about them.
I will begin to have conversations with members of the Admissions office to discuss Multicultural April Visit Days. Many students including myself have felt that we should reevaluate the amount of integration that prospective multicultural students have with prospective majority students.  In light of the new diversity initiative I feel that every party should work hard from the very beginning to form strong relationships.
Peer-to-peer relationships are very important during our daily lives, but there is also a necessity to connect with professors and alumni. This is something that I discussed with members of the faculty and alumni over the last month. Over the next few months I want to start thinking about how we can involve alumni in our lives on more than just one occasion in the fall. I want alumni to start playing a bigger role in our lives from our first year onwards. This is something that I am looking forward to starting this spring and hopefully to continue over the next few years.
Likewise, faculty-student relationships have also been a little lackluster over the last few years. Many students want a stronger connection with their professors outside of class and office hours. During some recent meetings students and faculty talked about having faculty become liaisons for Broad Street houses, dorms and apartment complexes. This would be an excellent way for faculty to learn more about students who they don't come in contact with and visa versa.
In coming weeks you will receive more information about Spring Party Weekend, the new Comparative Literature major, revamped Cruiser schedules and the Greek Forum. If you have any comments, questions or concerns about what I said or any suggestions for the SGA, please email me at ramandcasey@mail.colgate.edu.
