The SGA kicked off Senate this week by approving funding for Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek international. We also approved the Arts! Initiative and I gave a presentation of the Covered Cruiser Stops. The first drawings were drafted by Tom Lawson and Jonathan Ryan and will be available for your viewing on the Portal within a week. The SGA is committed to many different aspects of Campus life and we cannot stress more the importance of your attendance at various academic, social, and athletic events.
Winterfest is approaching and the SGA is working with CAB, IFC, and the Arts Festival to make it a one week long festival. There are a lot of things planned and I hope that many of you get involved. There will be athletic events, art competitions, and the Winter Olympics. Along with Winterfest there will be events planned to raise money for tsunami relief. I encourage all of you to donate as much as possible, since every dime can go a long way. The SGA has made it our goal to raise $13,000 by the end of the semester and with your help we can exceed our goal.
Issues that will be discussed this semester include addressing study spaces during next year's full closure of the library. I want to make sure that all current juniors, sophomores, first-years, and incoming first-years have comfortable and quiet study spaces with the best possible access to library books. I will also be addressing the issue of the Colgate Viewbook, which currently doesn't have a single picture or article about Greek Life at Colgate. Greek houses were a major aspect of Colgate's past and are vital part of Colgate's future. Their presence in Colgate's most visible prospective catalogue is crucial and will provide prospective students with information about one of Colgate's best traditions.
In addition to the above mentioned issues, we will be tackling other smaller issues that you can read about in the minutes or on the SGA page in the Maroon News. Some of these issues including improving the Pub menu, getting recycling and trash cans downtown, and working with Colgate's athletic department to create a mascot. Your ideas are also welcome and you can give those to me by e-mailing ramandcasey@mail.colgate.edu.
