The Colgate track teams hit the road this weekend as the women placed third at the St. Lawrence University open while the men faced powerhouse Army at the Black Knight Invitational and had four finishers in the top three.
The Raider women were led by several impressive performances, as sophomore Hannah Failing, classmate Nicole Christoforo, first-year Sarah Miller and junior Lisa Germain each won their individual events. Failing blew away the competition in the 1,500m, beating her closest opponent by 10 seconds with a time of 4:39:55. Failing's time converts into a 5:01:35 mile time, which would place her fourth on the Raider all-time list. Failing was back for a second 1,500m run in the distance medley relay, in which she ran the anchor leg and brought the Raiders back from a 70-yard deficit to win.
"Sarah had a fantastic double performance with only an hours break," head coach Laura Nardelli said. "She dropped 20 seconds from her time to set a new personal record."
Failing's performance was good enough to qualify her for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at a very early point in the season. Failing was also named the Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week for her impressive performances in the medley relay and the 1,500m.
Christoforo ran one of the top-10 1,000m races in Colgate history with a 3:01:24 time, which placed her first. "Christoforo ran a great race all alone [in] setting a personal record," Nardelli said.
Miller won her first collegiate race with a time of 10:56:80 in the 3,000m. Sophomore Meaghan McAnaney finished third, four seconds behind Miller with a time of 11:00:84.
Germain, Colgate's all-time record holder in the triple jump, outdistanced the competition with a leap of 34' 2" to earn first place honors in the triple jump.
As a team the Raiders dominated the 800m event, as they placed three runners in the top five. Junior Sarah Hildebrand edged out her teammate, first-year Abby Chapman, by 0.1 seconds to earn third place with a time of 2:23:41. Chapman finished fourth while first-year Elizabeth Kennedy ended up right behind her with a time of 2:23:98.
