Although you may not realize it, some of the policies and decisions that effect your life here at Colgate may have been directly influenced by Senior Sean Meehan. By working with a variety of deans and administrators and sitting on a variety of boards-Sean served on the D-Board, the Student Advisory Board, the Economics Student Advisory Board, is a senator for the Student Government Association and Vice-President of Beta-- Sean has contributed to a good amount of the different policies formulated in the past four years. In fact, he considers his involvement in the University's political atmosphere to be his greatest contribution to Colgate.
"I think I have left a legacy at this school that I can be proud of and that will allow me to fondly remember my time at Colgate." Sean said. In addition to his political involvement, Sean serves as captain of the Rugby team. For the first time in 36 years of the club's history, the team has advanced to the Northeastern Regional Quarterfinals, where they will play Yale this weekend. Sean takes great pride in his team, especially as he has helped to build it up over the past four years. "Rugby would have to be my favorite activity because myself and the other seniors on the team have been able to turn the program into one of the strongest teams in the Northeast," he said. "I feel as though I have put a lot of effort into the club and that it definitely has paid off." The Rugby team's success may have been partially a result of Sean's experience last spring playing Rugby in Wellington, New Zealand for Wellington's 21 and under rugby team.
Looking back he says, "It was an amazing experience to be in the midst of such a rugby crazed culture, and an added bonus to be able to play with the locals. Though I was almost killed in a number of different games, I did hold my own and left as the leading scorer in the club."
Sean's other favorite sport is skiing, which doesn't come as a surprise, since he's from Vail, Colorado. Ironically, although Sean skis instead of snowboards, he has been involved in organizing Snowboard Outreach Society (SOS) for this winter in Vail. SOS is a nonprofit group that provides underprivileged kids with the opportunity to come to Vail, once a week during the season, to snowboard. In addition to teaching these children how to snowboard, SOS teaches social responsibility.
Sean's devotion to helping younger students extends to Colgate's campus, where Sean served as a Link Leader.
"It really is a unique experience to help other students become adjusted to life at Colgate, and the rest of the staff are some of the most involved and interesting people on campus," he said.
Although he wouldn't mind returning to New Zealand to play more Rugby after graduating, Sean plans to use his Environmental Economics major to gain some work experience in Washington DC before attending law school. But before he leaves, if Sean could offer freshman any advice, he would say: "Become as involved as possible in the many activities and clubs that Colgate offers. Though the academic load at Colgate is quite demanding, if one does not experience the other unique aspects of the college, they rob themselves of a number of unparalleled opportunities to help shape their character and mature as unique individuals."
