Volleyball Spikes Competition and Takes Two at 'Gate Classic

The Colgate volleyball team hosted last week's Colgate Classic and came away with two solid victories in three matches. This weekend's tournament was good competition for each of the teams, which composed of an evenly skilled quartet that included our very own Raiders, the Kent State Golden Flashes, the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Boston College Eagles.

"Fresh Friday": Fueling First Year Interest

Although the Alana Cultural Center was full of activity inside on Friday, August 29, any student walking within one hundred feet of the building could tell from the sights and sounds that a party was going on. With strobe lights and raging music greeting attendees at the door, the Alana Cultural Center welcomed all students to experience a fun and friendly atmosphere as they embarked on their college career.

Men's Soccer Kicks off Season

The Colgate men's soccer team opened its 2008 campaign with a bang last Saturday, as the Raiders beat La Salle, 2-0 in front of a buzzing home crowd to earn their first victory of the season. Powered behind goals from juniors Alex Weekes and Chris Ross, a stifling defense and solid keeper play, the Raiders dominated the La Salle Explorers throughout nearly the entire ninety minutes of action.

Singing in Sync

he new school year has begun and Colgate is already buzzing with the events and shows that will fill the calendar all year. At 7:30 p.m. Monday night students were treated to the first a cappella concert of the school year. Although all of the four a cappella groups (The Colgate Thirteen, The Swinging Gates, The Resolutions and the Dischords) performed at an orientation presentation over the weekend, this is the first true concert open to all students and focusing solely on these groups.

The Sarah Palin Selection

In a surprise move last Friday, McCain chose Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. The selection seems to have been made on the basis of three major considerations. Palin is extremely socially conservative and thus has the potential to reinvigorate the conservative base, which up until this point has been only lukewarm toward the thought of a McCain presidency.
