Allan McCollum: Shapes for Hamilton

3/8/10 5:17 PM

Allan McCollum is one of the most interesting artists I have ever met. Well, I guess I really haven't met him in person, but after hearing his lecture some weeks ago, his name has gained special recognition in my life. McCollum is currently serving as the Christian A. Johnson artist-in-residence in Colgate's small but serious art and art history department. He arrived around a month ago and has been working with students and faculty alike on the organization and execution of his newest artistic endeavor to date, namely, Shapes for Hamilton. McCollum has been an artist his entire life whom, despite never attending college, has been wildly successful at making the art-intelligentsia stop to stare, gawk, and brood over his creations numerous times over his decades-long career....

Mostly Other People Do the Killing

2/19/10 8:03 PM

MOPDTK are a bass, drums, sax, and trumpet jazz quartet.  They're a relatively young band and they've released four records together, the latest of which, Forty Fort, I've reviewed below: Forty Fort is a highly physical, high intensity record.  MOPDTK sounds like a rabid beast throughout, constantly testing the limits of utter insanity but never losing touch with structure entirely.  The songs don’t hold your hand with sustained grooves.  Instead, the quartet quickly travels in and out of grooves via passages of frenetic, buzzing, atonal horn work and blistering rhythm.  The most exciting moments of the album occur on these unfriendly sonic detours, like in the middle of “Little Hope,” which pits the strained squeals of Peter Evans’ trumpet...

WRCU: It's Like Picking a Flower but that Flower is a Bear

2/8/10 2:06 AM

Bruckner's Symphony #6 plays in one room, while in another students discuss the merits of the Shaggs, then later that night a student becomes visibly perturbed by another student calling John Coltrane pretentious and complaining about Coltrane's music. Although this may seem to be a bizarre university that exists nowhere near Hamilton, New York, such scenes happen often right here in Colgate University. The O'Connor Campus center--colloquially known as the COOP--contains resources for students, a place to eat, a place to study, a conference room, and student mailboxes, but deep in the basement of the COOP also lies the location where such odd conversations occurred. That place is WRCU, Colgate's radio station. Although WRCU is very apparent from the outside with a gigantic window into the...

Talk Shows

1/25/10 12:20 AM

My two favorite shows on WRCU, believe it or not, were talk shows, which I find to be highly entertaining on Colgate's radio station. I was a Guest DJ one week on Blue Line Bill and Slapshot Scott, which is a hockey talk show that focuses on the NHL but also talks about 'Gate hockey as well. I also really liked Sports Animals and Subject:Matter. I know for certain that Bill and Scott's great show will be back, but hopefully some more people host great talk shows again this semester.
