Senior Bill Gabler has certainly made waves in Colgate's music scene. Over the course of his four years here, he has worked hard to spread his love for music to fellow students.
Gabler is a psychology and sociology and anthropology double concentrator. He is also a member of Konosioni. In his sophomore and junior years, Gabler was the Music Director of WRCU and President of the Student Committee on Providing Entertainment (SCOPE). This year he stepped down from those positions, but is continuing work with the organizations. For his senior year, Gabler is focusing his attention mainly on his work in the Colgate Activities Board (CAB) as music co-chair.
Gabler started out at Colgate as a boy with a passion for music. On a whim, he decided to sign up for a radio show.
"I didn't really have much knowledge of it going in," he said.
Gabler enjoyed his own radio show, and from there, went on to pursue his passion for music with CAB and SCOPE. CAB sponsors a number of social events on campus; and as music-co-chair, Gabler works to bring concerts to Colgate. SCOPE, meanwhile, works closely with the WRCU board to bring independent bands to Colgate, which WRCU then promotes.
Being a part of these groups has helped Gabler pursue his passion for music.
"I like having the opportunity to get a wide variety of new music as soon as it comes out, before you read the reviews and get all the hype on it," he said.
He has also enjoyed getting involved with the music industry through these organizations.
"It's nice to go beyond 'the Colgate bubble' and make contacts with record promoters and booking agents and other people involved in the music industry."
This past summer, Gabler worked at a booking agency in San Francisco. After graduation, he hopes to return to the San Francisco Bay area.
Given his experiences at Colgate, Gabler advises his fellow students to join different clubs, to experiment and to try new things.
"You need to get involved. Don't be afraid to try something new. There are so many groups on campus and so many people willing to help. You can very easily end up discovering something you love that you never would have thought of before. With WRCU, I just sort of stumbled into it and ended up loving it," Gabler said.
