The Student Senate is abuzz with activity and change.
First, we have three newly elected Senators At Large: Rob Sobelman '08, Grafton Connor '09, and Ginger Northrop '09. With seven people running for three spots it was an extremely tight race and we congratulate all three of these new Senators on their election and welcome them to the Student Senate.
Second, all students who are interested in running for student body President or Vice President should pencil in the first information session for potential candidates to be held on Monday, February 26 at 8 p.m. at a location to be determined.
Third, elections for the Townhouse Senator will be held next Monday, February 19th and we encourage all Townhouse residents to vote in this race.
Fourth, the Senate seat for students living in the Birch Apartment complex remains open. If you are interested in assuming this position please contact the Election Commissioners Christopher Nulty (CNulty) or Ann Redpath (ARedpath) for more information.
Fifth, some words about the proposed new Student Government Association (SGA) Constitution, which both Jeremy and I supported during our campaign last year.
For years students have been disillusioned with SGA as they felt it was disrespected by the administration and not representative of the student body. The Constitutional Revision Committee's (CRC) proposed new SGA Constitution addresses these issues in many new and innovative ways, but perhaps the most substantial change is altering the basis of student representation from housing units to equal student representation from each class. Jeremy and I believe if restructured in accordance with the proposed Constitution, the SGA will be a more viable and accountable institution. Consequently, Jeremy and I encourage all members of the Senate to thoroughly review the proposed new Constitution, engage their constituents in productive dialogue about what this new Constitution will mean to Colgate's community in the future, and finally to vote to implement the new Constitution.
Jeremy and I believe that the SGA will again command the respect of the administration and faculty and more accurately represent the true will of the entire Colgate campus if the new Constitution is adopted.
As always please, feel free to stop by the SGA office anytime with any questions, issues or concerns.
