Last week Colgate was fortunate enough to have the internationally acclaimed author Tim Flannery on campus to speak about his book, The Weather Makers and the various challenges that global climate change presents to our future. He was clear that Colgate could be doing more to take steps to be a more environmentally friendly campus and commented that students must take the lead in 0this movement.
We are glad that Mr. Flannery was able to speak to the Colgate Community and hope to use the knowledge gained from The Weather Makers and his talk on campus to help students advance an environmentally friendly agenda.
When we were elected in April, we immediately began a search for a student that was a motivated, intelligent, and knowledgeable to lead the SGA's efforts at making Colgate a more environmentally friendly university. We are proud to report that senior Nicole Svajlenka, SGA Policy Coordinator for Environmental Initiatives, is doing a fantastic job and making significant progress.
Through the hard work of Nicole, the SGA Leadership, and the SGA Senate, we are proud to announce that the SGA is going to be beginning several environmental initiatives over the next month. Some of the initiatives will reduce use of bottled water, increase recycling, use more biodegradable containers, utilize alternative sources of energy, and decrease energy use.
The initiatives will be laid out in detail in the coming weeks, but we hope that you will continue to think about the choices you make every time you make the decision whether to walk or drive, recycle or throw out, or whether to turn off the light when you leave the room. It will take efforts on the part of every one of us to increase Colgate's environmentally friendly practices and the time to start is now! We look forward to working with the entire Colgate Community in the coming months to implement significant changes to make Colgate as environmentally friendly as possible.
