Editor’s Column: A Kink in the Colgate Connection

As an elite liberal arts institution Colgate treats its students to many different things. We have wonderful, intimate classes, first-rate professors, Division I athletics; the school really offers the best in so many areas. Unfortunately, Colgate’s wireless system – such an important aspect of the modern university – fails to hold up to this same standard. The groans that are consistently heard from students struggling to connect to the Internet, or the four-letter words students yell as they wait for the web to load at seemingly dial-up speeds are unacceptable. If Colgate truly wants to allow students to have a superior education, then the Internet, required for many various student activities, needs to be better. Full story

Being Right: More of the Same... Or Not

Last Wednesday President Obama was his usual poised, confident and articulate self. However, I think even his supporters would agree that the content of his State of the Union Address was not all that original. Maybe I follow politics too closely, but between watching Obama in office for a year and following his campaign for what seemed like a decade, I have heard almost everything from the State of the Union before.

What's Left: Tuned Out

I’m going to be honest with everyone on this one: I didn’t watch the State of the Union. It’s not because I don’t care or I’m an anarchist. I did have a lot of work that night and listening to the President talk and Congress applaud every couple minutes didn’t really peak my interest at the time. Besides these very superficial reasons for not tuning in, my other reasons are much more grounded in my political beliefs. .

Economic Response Group Announces Budget Priorities

Last spring, American International Group reported fourth quarter loses of $62 billion, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell below 7,000 points for the first time since 1997 and the unemployment rate skyrocketed to 8.1 percent, a trend that has yet to reverse.

Queer Corner: War Against the Femme

Let’s face it: we all have different types of people to which we are attracted. I have a friend that goes ga-ga over redheads, and another that only cares about how well a person dances. I always like to ask someone to describe what his “ideal” partner is like, or have him tell me what he looks for in a person to whom he is attracted. It’s interesting because people have so many different things they look for, and usually no two people are looking for exactly the same thing.

In the Light: Doneisha Snider

There are some people who do so much around campus that you cannot possibly imagine where they find the hours in the day to fit it all in. Senior Doneisha Snider is one of these people – and she still finds the time to be welcoming. Although involved in countless clubs and organizations, she doesn’t flaunt it. Instead, she will invite you to a mismatch party dedicated to addressing social segregation on campus, and you will find yourself scribbling down “mismatch” in the box for February 20 on your calendar.

Cool Hand Kevin

Kevin Durant is the third best player in the NBA. Right now. Durant is on one of the greatest hot streaks in the history of the NBA and has shown no signs of slowing down. If given the choice to start their franchise over, any NBA General Manager in his right mind would, after LeBron, pick the 21-year old Durantula.

Listen to the Music: Big Things for Broad Street Records

An impulsive cursory search for Broad Street Records on Facebook tells me that they have posted two status updates in the past month, four links since last week and have about 280 fans to date. Another glance at the Personal Interests section informs me that they’re big fans of music, talent, creativity and Colgate University. It may not be much of a Facebook fan page, but these all seem to be important things that a fledging college record label truly needs.
